Start with what is happening at home
Most people don't search for a service name. They search for a symptom: lights flickering in one room, a safety switch that won't reset, or a kitchen with too few outlets. Work out which of these groups your job fits, and the right service usually follows.
When the problem is urgent
If there is smoke, sparking, a burning smell, or someone has had a shock, move away from the area and call 000 first. Once everyone is safe, an emergency electrician is the right choice for urgent jobs like these:
- Power is out in your home but the neighbours still have it
- A switch, outlet or the switchboard feels hot or is buzzing
- Water has reached a light fitting, power point or the meter box
If you can do it safely, turn off the main switch. Don't open covers or touch damaged wiring.
When something keeps tripping or cutting out
A circuit that trips over and over is telling you something, and resetting it again and again won't fix the cause. Electrical fault finding is the right service when the cause isn't obvious, for example:
- One circuit drops out when a certain appliance runs
- Lights flicker or dim with no clear pattern
- An outlet or a whole room has stopped working
Before you book, note which circuits are affected, when it happens and what was running at the time. That helps narrow down the fault faster.
When the home's electrics are getting old
Plenty of homes around Dandenong, Noble Park and Doveton still have older switchboards with ceramic fuses or very few circuits. If your board looks like that, or you are adding big loads such as air conditioning or an induction cooktop, ask about a switchboard upgrade.
Older boards often have no safety switch protection, or only cover some circuits. Adding safety switches can be a separate job or part of an upgrade, so it is worth asking which suits your board.
When you are adding or changing fittings
For planned work, choose the service that matches what you are installing:
- Power point installation for extra outlets, USB outlets or moving existing ones
- Downlight installation for new ceiling lights or swapping old halogen fittings for LEDs
- Smoke alarm installation for new, replacement or interconnected alarms
Count how many points or fittings you need and check what sits in the roof space above, because ceiling access and insulation can change how the job is done.
When you want peace of mind
An electrical safety inspection suits buyers checking a home before or after settlement, landlords between tenants, and anyone in an older house who isn't sure what is behind the walls. It can also tell you whether a switchboard upgrade or extra safety switches are worth doing.
Still not sure which service fits?
Write down what you have noticed, which rooms are affected and roughly how old the home is. Then pick the closest service above. If it covers more than one, say so. Request a quote here once you have picked the closest service, and a licensed and insured local contractor can follow up.
