The area around Dandenong and Endeavour Hills
The area runs from Dandenong itself out through the established suburbs to the north and west, and east and south into the newer growth suburbs. Each suburb card below links to a page with notes about the homes there and the electrical jobs they tend to need.
How the age of your home changes the electrical job
Housing age is the main thing that changes from suburb to suburb. It affects what sits behind the walls, how much the switchboard can handle and how much work an upgrade involves.
Established suburbs with older homes
Much of Dandenong, Doveton, Noble Park and Springvale was built in the decades after the war. In homes of that age, the original wiring, ceramic fuses and boards with little spare room still turn up fairly often. These are the homes where a switchboard upgrade or added safety switches usually comes up first, often once someone wants a new appliance, an extra circuit or a renovation.
If your home is in one of these suburbs, look at your board before you call. Note whether it has old fuses or modern switches, and whether you can see a test button on a safety switch.
Newer estates further out
Suburbs such as Lynbrook, Lyndhurst and parts of Narre Warren and Hampton Park have more homes built in recent decades. These homes usually already have modern boards and safety switches, so the jobs lean more towards additions: extra power points, downlight changes, outdoor lighting or replacing smoke alarms that have reached the end of their life.
Suburbs with a mix of both
Endeavour Hills, Hallam, Keysborough and Dandenong North have a blend of older streets and newer pockets. Two houses a few streets apart can need quite different work, so it helps to know roughly when your home was built or last rewired.
When the job is urgent
Some problems can't wait for a booked visit, whatever suburb you're in. Power that keeps tripping, a burning smell from a power point or switch, sparking, or a board that feels hot all need an emergency electrician quickly. If there is a fire, a person has had an electric shock or a power line is down, call 000 first and keep everyone well clear.
Before you choose your suburb page
Think about three things: roughly how old your home is, what the problem or project is, and whether it is urgent. Having those answers in mind makes it easier to pick the right service and talk through the job clearly when you call.
